This exercise is intended to get students to understand composing with implied harmonies. It works great as an introduction to voice leading, improvising be-bop, or hearing tension and release with chord tones and non-chord tones.
This is a guide for students to consider the affective qualities of musical elements in programmatic music. The intention is to help them make informed observations about the music before they have been made aware of the story.
Students read Berlioz’s program notes and use the “Music Listening Guide” above to brainstorm the programmatic musical qualities they might hear in the 4th Movement of Symphonie Fantastique. Then, they listen to the recording and compare their expectations with the actual music.
